The school
Víkurskóli, a new primary school in northern Grafarvogur, opened on August 1, 2020.
Víkurskóli is for students in grades 8 to 10 who went to Borgaskóli and Engjaskóli. There are about 240 students. Víkurskóli emphasizes innovation. Innovation is the key to new solutions, improved processes, and the solution of difficult subjects. A school of innovation supports these abilities in its teaching methods and the way we approach subjects.
Students benefit most from doing, experiencing, reflecting and discussing. Víkurskóli, therefore, emphasizes integration and team teaching. Team teaching increases teacher collaboration within and between grade levels. This approach allows teachers to better use their talents and strengths with colleagues.
Formative learning methodology is paramount at Víkurskóli. Professional education requires diverse teaching methods, exploring innovations, experimenting and developing theories of practice. The goal is to empower Víkurskóli staff and students for an enjoyable and successful journey. For the school to be an effective learning community, its culture must support continuous staff learning. Víkurskóli has received Reykjavík City's Rainbow Certification, which we're very proud of.
Vígyn, the youth center, operates within Víkurskóli.

Primary school meals
School meals are free for the 2024-2025 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.
Students registered last year will be automatically enrolled. Others need to register. Change the registration at matur.vala.is.
Parent cooperation
We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in school activities. All schools in Reykjavík City have an active parent association.
